I am sure many of you have heard about chocolate and how it is SOOO fattening, and full of sugar. However, I am also sure many of you have heard about how dark chocolate is supposedly a heart healthy antioxidant. In my personal research, I have found supporting evidence that caffeine can be helpful when wanting to bump up your metabolism. So I ordered a nutritional breakdown for different chocolate types from the Guittard Chocolate offices and it states that semi-sweet chocolate has 20mg caffeine in 1 oz. So as part of my daily need for sugar and something super rich, I just have 10-15 semi-sweet chocolate chips and I LOVE it. I don’t get more than 4 carbs, and I am getting a metabolic bump up, just a small one, and not even a gram of fat. Cholesterol is not present in cocoa beans and only occurs when milk or milk fats are added.
Just FYI, cocoa powder has about 60 mg of caffeine in 1 oz, which is about 2 Tablespoons. A can of caffeinated soda usually has between 55-85 mg of caffeine, and a cup of coffee has 180-250mg of caffeine.
