Soft Sugar Cookies and Classic Vanilla Frosting

I know that there are MANY great sugar cookie recipes, but this one has never failed me, and it is the only recipe so far that I have cut in 1/2 or doubled and got the same results. My tip: DO NOT OVER BAKE THEM. Sugar cookies are not a typical cookie! Don’t wait for the edges to turn golden! In my opinion, these look and taste similar to the big sugar cookies you get in the checkout lines at the store! 🙂

1 1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. shortening
2 eggs
1 cup sour cream
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
4 1/2 c. unsifted flour
1 tsp. salt

Mix together sugar, shortening, and eggs until fluffy. Add vanilla, sour cream and baking soda. Mix well. Stir in flour, baking powder, and salt. Divide the dough in 1/2, wrap each in plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator for at least and hour. Roll out and cut about 1/4 inch thick. Bake on greased cookie sheet at 375 F for about 7 minutes or less. Frost when completely cool.

Classic Vanilla Frosting
1/4 c. shortening
1/4 c. butter
2 tsp vanilla
3-4 cups powdered sugar
Cold milk (to adjust consistency)

Cream the shortening and butter with the vanilla. Slowly add the sugar adjusting the thickness with milk (only about a tsp at a time) until perfect consistency for your project (cookies, cake, decorating, Graham crackers…ect).
