Good Ol’ Oats…. super healthy people!!

So I have been buying instant oatmeal packets for 7 years…. basically since we’ve had kids. As a child my mother made— yes, MADE— homemade, home-cooked, from scratch oatmeal about once a week. I know… did you know you can buy oats and boil them and make your own oatmeal???? Im not being entirely sarcastic here. There is evidence more and more that people of my own generation do not know how food is made…. anyway- that is a soapbox for another day….

So OATMEAL. What is so great about OATS and OATMEAL????
Here are just a few facts about WHOLE Oats— NOT INSTANT or QUICK oats… its ok! You can change- your not too late! Instant oats are NOT as healthy as regular rolled oats. Anyway- so the facts on regular, pure OATS:

  • Proven to lower cholesterol
  • Rich in fiber
  • Rich in IRON
  • Rich in Protein
  • High in magnesium and manganese and copper
  • Low in fat
  • Medium glycemic level food- great to start the day with!
  • All you need to do is add a fruit and you’ve got a complete amino acid chain!

So how do you make your own OATMEAL???
Well, you can MICROWAVE it in only 3-4 minutes. Follow the directions on the side of the package/bag/canister, etc. Or just make about 2:1 ratio water to oats. So if you want 1 cup of oatmeal, microwave about 1/3 oats and 2/3 cup water for 3-4 mins and voila! Then add whatever you want to it- I suggest some salt, berries and a dash of cinnamon…. or how about peanut butter and bananas? How about a few chocolate chips? Mmmmmm. Yumminess.
